CAN I APPEAL THE COLLEGE AWARD PACKAGE?
If you find that the financial award package offered to you will not meet you needs, you may appeal. Keep in mind that a lot of students are vying for the same funds. You must make your reasons for asking for additional aid compelling without bullying the counselor. Every college financial aid counselor that I have spoken to has told me they hate the “wheeling and dealing” game. That is applicants who say they will not go to College X unless they get more money. Know what? Unless you make Einstein look slow or are the greatest football player on the planet College X isn't going to play that game. They have hundreds of potential candidates who do want to go there that financial aid counselors do not have to bend to your demands. On the other hand, if you let them know of your financial situation, how important attending their school is to you, how you will enrich their student body and leave a positive mark, you will have better luck getting more money.

WILL PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIPS REDUCE MY COLLEGE AWARD?  Unfortunately, at some colleges, private scholarships can actually reduce parts of your financial aid package. It's a good idea to contact the financial aid office of schools that interest you and inquire about their policies regarding outside scholarships
